Works great as an AP, throughput sometimes doesn't "max out"
I have this set up as an access point in my residence. My setup is as follows: the engenius is ceiling-mounted and it home-runs back to my main router (an Open-BSD based pfSense box) using a 1Gbps Cat5e cable. I'm able to take nearly full advantage of my Comcast 105 mbps service sometimes, other times this AP tops off at about 25mbps (my wired clients still get the full throughput). I'm not sure why even though my laptop's 802.11ac card recognises the 80Mhz channel width, displaying a 650mbps connection.
The form factor is perfect for a ceiling-mounted application and the web interface for management is great! For those of you who want to use this as an AP, follow these instructions:
1) Run a cable from your main router to this, and plug it into one of the LAN ports, not WAN
2) If your router assigns IPs from 192.168.1.1-254, change that to 192.168.1.1-199
3) Set the Engenius IP to 192.168.1.200, or something like that, OUTSIDE your DHCP range. This can...
Funny that sometimes the WDS wireless signal would show up ...
I bought two ESR1200's in order to leverage them in WDS mode as I have wired only devices downstairs and cannot run a cat 5/6 cable between that and my modem/primary router. I called Engenius prior to my purchase to confirm that I could not only do this on the 5ghz channel but also that I could use WPA or WPA2 and they confirmed that I could. After a significant amount of time testing and retesting and calling into support, it was determined that I cannot use WPA when using WDS mode. It does work with no encryption but that is not acceptable as anyone can then jump on my network. Funny that sometimes the WDS wireless signal would show up in my wireless options and other times it would not (it should not show up). I might be able to use WEP but I can already do that on my current routers and I want to get away from that as it slows communication down and is easily hackable.
As an aside, I downloaded the newest firmware v1.2.2 and the product is v1.0. Interface is a bit buggy...
This is the router you are looking for
I have done plenty of research and lots of time seeking the best router for my needs. This router fits all of my needs perfectly. I love how much configuration that comes built into the thing. It has plenty of strength and even more speed. If you are looking for a low price 802.11 AC router this is the router you are looking for.
