Samsung BD-F5100 Upgraded Multi Region Zone Free Blu Ray DVD Player - PAL/NTSC - Worldwide Voltage - 6 Feet HDMI Cable Included

Buyer beware!
Great - a well reviewed, region free blu ray and DVD player to watch a lot of great foreign movies and TV series.

Well, that was the functionality advertized...

What we received was a BD-H5100 (retail $62.99) with a sticker on the back with the words "Region Free" on it. Did it play UK DVDs? yes. Did it play UK Blu Rays? No - just a message saying "This Blu Ray can only be played on Region B players."

So, we asked Samsung - they said that they don't make region free players for sale in the US. When we peeled back the "Region Free" label, which was pretty shoddy when peeled back - very "home-made", there was the official Samsung "Region A" Blu Ray code.

Disclaimer: reviews are just personal opinions, and not accusations, but here's our opinion for what it's worth: we did some research on the internet, and players can be "hacked" to make them region free, so perhaps what we received was a $62.99 unit that had been hacked (unsuccessfully) by...

Works quite well
Purchased the BD-F5100 6 months ago and have been very pleased with its multi region capabilities as well as a DVD/Blu ray player. This unit is mated to a Samsung LED HDTV. Unfortunately, the reviews of different Samsung players have been combined into the thread of this unit and may have caused some confusion about its multi region capabilities.

Therefore to clarify, for DVDs this unit automatically detects the region (0-9) and then plays the disk. However, for Blu ray disks, one has to manually change the region (A, B or C) first; otherwise, the player defaults to the factory setting, which for USA is Region A. The user manual from Samsung does NOT address how to manually change the Blu ray region.

However, enclosed in my purchase was an instructions sheet from 220-electronics.com with the following directions (abridged version follows):

1) Turn player off using remote - wait until player is fully off before proceeding. Make sure Quickstart is turned...

OK for a while...now problems are starting
It did what it supposed to for the first month or so, and now its starting not to recognize the zone/region. Its supposed to change zones/region automatically, which it did at first, and now it stopped doing that. and last night it started not recognizing Blu Ray discs. Not happy that this expensive DVD player is starting to go wrong. In fact of the three Samsung products we own, none of them have been trouble free and we would think twice about buying another Samsung product.
